The smart handheld device market continues healthy market growth, with 1999 worldwide unit shipments expected to total 8.9 million. This represents a growth rate of 34.5% over actual 1998 unit shipments of 6.6 million.

International Data Corporation (IDC) expects the market to grow another 44.5% by the year 2000 to an estimated 12.9 million units.

The drivers for market growth are:

  • strong demand in the $300 personal companion segment.

  • growing interest for sub-$200 devices based on the Palm OS and Microsoft™ Windows™ CE.

  • emergence of new smart phones from major handset suppliers.

3Com will continue to be the leading vendor in the overall market in 1999 because of strong demand for the Palm platform. 3Com had a 27.1% share of the worldwide SHD market in 1998, followed by Sharp Electronics with 7.7%. In 1998, 3Com had a 42% market share in the handheld companion market.

The worldwide personal companion market ended 1998 with 2.65 million units shipped, and 3Com shipped over 65%.

IDC is forecasting 1999 personal companion shipments to be 4 million units due to the anticipated success of the new Palm V platform and new entries from vendors such as Hewlett-Packard and Compaq.
