Alere Toxicology introduces iScreen® OFD – Cotinine.

Alere Toxicology introduced the iScreen® OFD – Cotinine device, a rapid, oral fluid screening test that can be performed anytime without the use of an instrument. The test detects elevated levels of cotinine (nicotine metabolite) in oral fluid for accurate determination of smoking status. Professional, trained staff members can conveniently administer this point of care screening test and obtain reliable results for the presence of cotinine within 10 minutes. Features and benefits include: accurate screening for cotinine (primary metabolite of nicotine); it detects up to 1-2 days after nicotine use; qualitative detection of cotinine in oral fluids at a cutoff of 30 ng/mL; simple collection and testing procedure; results in as little as 10 minutes; long shelf life with room temperature storage; and integrated internal procedural control.

BD introduces insulin syringe with the BD Ultra-Fine™ 6mm needle

The new BD Ultra-Fine™ 6mm Needle is the smallest insulin syringe needle offered by BD and is designed to provide greater patient comfort. Not only is it preferred by more than 80 percent of the patients who trialed it, but it is also proven to be as effective as longer syringe needles for patients of all sizes. Clinical studies have proven that shorter needles effectively deliver an insulin dose to subcutaneous tissue (the layer of fat below the skin), the recommended site for insulin injections, while reducing the risk of injecting into muscle. The BD Ultra-Fine 6mm Needle provides consistent and reliable subcutaneous delivery of insulin to both adults and children. Smaller syringe needles help reduce the risk of painful intramuscular injections and are less intimidating for patients. The American Association of Diabetes Educators recognized the safety and efficacy of shorter syringe needle lengths in its recently published article on strategies for insulin injection therapy.
