The top ten products sold to hospitals by distributors grew just 3.1 percent from 1999 to 2000, as compared to an 8.7 percent growth rate the previous year, says the recently released Health Industry Distributors Association (HIDA) Hospital Market Report.

The Hospital Market Report is one of a series of reports that examines the current state of the hospital, physician, and long-term care markets. The reports offer an analysis of the market, including financial conditions, supply investments, and insurance issues, and provide conclusions on potential growth opportunities for distributors.

According to the association's Physician Market Report, outpatient procedures in physician offices or alternate sites have increased over 20 percent in the past ten years. Once considered ''overnighters,'' cosmetic surgeries, tonsillectomies, and gallbladder removals are all migrating to the physician office.

In its Long Term Care Market Report, the association reports that staffing shortages are on the forefront of many legislative agendas. In the next ten years, over 50 percent of the current workforce will retire. By 2020 the workforce will fall 20 percent short of projected demands.
